Common tripod questions
Common tripod questions

Do I need a tripod or a bipod?

For prone and bench shooting, a bipod is fast and always on the rifle. For kneeling, seated and standing shots, a tripod is far more stable. Many shooters end up with both.

How tall should my tripod be?

Tall enough to reach your highest shooting position without raising the center column all the way, which adds wobble. Measure your own standing rest height before buying.

Ball head or saddle?

Ball heads are versatile and work for optics and cameras too. Saddles load a rifle faster and hold it centered. Many shooters mount a saddle on top of a ball head for the best of both.

Carbon fiber or aluminum?

Carbon fiber is lighter and damps vibration, which matters when hiking. Aluminum is tougher, cheaper and fine for range use.

Can a camera tripod hold a rifle?

Small camera tripods are rarely rated for a rifle and flex under recoil. Use a tripod and head built for shooting, rated well above the weight of the gun.

What is ARCA?

A common dovetail standard for quick-release plates and rails. An ARCA rail on the rifle clamps directly into an ARCA head or saddle.
